Gerben Heitink is Emeritus Professor at the Free University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands. He completed his undergraduate degree in theology in 1963. From 1970-1988, he was a scientific collaborator and principal university lecturer in Practical Theology at the Theologische Hogeschool, Kampen. Since 1988 and until his retirement (2003) he was Professor and Head of the Department of Practical Theology at the Free University of Amsterdam. He also served as dean of that faculty. In 2003, he was offered an honorary Festschrift: De kunst van ontfermen. Studies voor Gerben Heitink. Heitinkís academic reputation is upheld by the many national and international societies of which he is a member. This includes the prestigious International Academy of Practical Theology (IAPT). He was also member of the editorial staff of the IAPTís Journal of Empirical Theology. Heitink furthermore played an important role in the scientific founding and establishment of Theology in the Netherlands. As acknowledgement for this he was nominated in the Nederlandsí Onderzoekinstituut voor Theologie en Religiewetenschappen. Heitink has earned international respect through many articles that have been published in national and international journals. His contemplative approach, thoroughness, scientific scholarship and original thinking were of international influence. He became known for his comprehensive word on pastoral care and counseling. He has enriched and enlarged the international environment with his book Practical Theology: History, Theory, Action Domains. Here Heitink reflects on the scientific and theoretical foundations of Practical Theology. This book has also been translated into Indonesian. An important work of him on ecclesiology was published in 2007, entitled: Een kerk met karakter. Tijd voor heroriŽntatie. Heitink is indeed regarded as a world class theologian and scholar.
