Hans van Oort obtained his DTh from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. He was professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Utrecht since 1986. He furthermore hold the following position: Senior Research Fellow Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (1987-1992); Fellow Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (1991-1992); Visiting Professor British Academy (1995-1996); Visiting Professor University of Stellenbosch (1998-2003); extra-ordinary Professor Christianity and Gnosticism University of Nijmegen (2000-2001). Since 2001 he has been full Professor of Patristics and Gnosticism at the University of Nijmegen (the Netherlands) and since 2000 he has been honorary professor of Patristics at the University of Pretoria. Prof Van Oort has published some twenty books and numerous articles. He is a member of several historical, patristic and theological international societies of learning and since 2001 he has been the President of the International Association of Manichaean Studies. He is the managing editor of Vigiliae Christianae (Brill, Leiden-Boston), the Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies (idem); the Corpus Fontium Manichaeorum (Brepols, Turnhout) and the book series Studien der patristischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft / Patristic Studies (Peeters, Leuven). His main publications and interests are on the history of the Early Church (particularly Augustine), on the history of the Reformation, and on Gnosticism and Manichaeism.
