Eckart Otto is Dean of the Faculty of Protestant Theology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. Since 1996 he is Professor (Ordinarius) for Old Testament at the University of Munich and since 2007 honorary professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He attained his doctoral degee (Dr theol) in 1973 and his postdoctoral lecture qualification in 1975. In 19781979 he became assistant director of the German Lutherian Institute for Archaeology in the Holy Land and from 19791996 he was full professor for Old Testament and Biblical Archaeology in Hamburg, Osnabruck and Mainz. He is a renowned international scholar as author of over 400 scholarly articles, as well as editor and co-editor of numerous series of monographs and journals, especially for the history of ancient law. Amongst others, one of his most important contributions is his work as editor of vol. I/21.12 of the Max-Weber-Gesamtausgabe (complete edition): Die Wirtschaftsethik der Weltreligionen. Das antike Judentum. Schriften 19111920. As visiting professor he presented lectures e.g., in Innsbruck, Jerusalem, Pretoria, Sibiu and Stellenbosch. He was a guest lecturer at numerous German and foreign universities, e.g., in Baltimore, Bloomington, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Madrid, New York, Paris, Uppsala and Vienna. He is honorary member of the Old Testament Society of South Africa.
