Maake J Masango is Professor in Practical Theology at the University of Pretoria. He attained the following qualifications: Diploma in Theology (Fort Hare), MA, M T S, and Th.D (Columbia Seminary, USA). His fields of specialization in Practical Theology is based on the themes of violence and abuse of marginalized people. Professor Masango is an active church leader both nationally and internationally. In the Uniting Presbyterian Church of South Africa he served as Moderator of his general Synod. Furthermore, he is not only member of the World Council of Churches and the World Alliance of Reform Churches, but also executive member of the All Africa Conference of Churches. He is a psychotherapist certified by the American Association of Pastoral care. Furthermore he was vice-president of the South African Council of Churches; President of Urban Rural Mission (International); Vice-president of the Society for Practical Theology in South Africa; Member of Societas Homiletica, the international society for Homeletics; Executive member of Peace for life in Asia; and a member of Georgia Association of pastoral care. As vice-president of the SA Council of Churches he addressed the Swedish Government on the issue of arms and state of the nation of South Africa.
Professor Masango received several awards. This includes: A Fulbright Scholarship (shared with dr Drew Smith) in 2008; Peace award by Mar Thoma Syrian Orthodox Church of Malabar, India in 2008; A distinguish Service Alumnus Award by Columbia Seminary, USA in 2008; In 1999 he was recognized as Kairos Theologian by the Institute of Contextual Theology and he was offered Awarded Citizenship by the Mayor of California.
